By: Idris Busari

The President of the Nigerian Association of Special Education Students, University of Ibadan (NASES UI), Mr Ayanwole Boluwatife Joshua PKA Prof B on Friday 31st March 2023 made it known in a circular that the most anticipated public speaking contest, Jaw War 2023 will be in grand style as it will cater for persons with disabilities.

“I am pleased, glad, and excited to announce to you that we have fought through inclusiveness in some of the big and top intellectual activities on the University of Ibadan campus. As the President of the Nigerian Association of Special Education Students, U.I (NASES UI), even though I’m leading the students at the department, that doesn’t make other special needs students who aren’t from the department of Special Education suffer. For this reason, I’m glad to announce to everyone that this year’s Jaw War will be different and its difference will forever be a legacy that will be forever followed. Nobody will be left behind in this forthcoming event, everyone will be carried along including those with disabilities,” the circular reads.

He further stated by encouraging persons with disabilities to make themselves available at the event. "So, I'm using this medium to encourage persons with disabilities on campus to always showcase their ability in disability. Likewise, they shouldn't let anyone take advantage of them and don't let anyone make them perform less due to their disabilities. I want to urge them to turn out massively for the JAW WAR because they have been included in the planning exercises."

In a letter of request dated, February 21st 2023 sent to The Literary and Debating Society (TLDS-UI), Mr Ayanwole Joshua stated 7 demands the organizers should follow in creating a participating environment for persons with disabilities.

According to the letter signed by the General Secretary of The Literary and Debating Society, University of Ibadan on March 30th 2023 in reply to the requests of the NASES President stated that; "The Literary and Debating Society (TLDS-UI) received your letter with the warmest pleasure as regards the forthcoming Jaw War competition. This very event is a true reflection of the inclusion of all except none; hence, we are pleased to have you on board. In light of this, we will be making all the necessary preparations as listed, to allow better comfortability for our friends in this category."

The NASES President assured other members of the association that his administration is working effortlessly to resuscitate the Special Needs Club on the University campus. “Likewise, I want to assure you that we are working tirelessly on how to resuscitate Special Needs Club in U.I, for effective inclusion and in ameliorating the daily basis challenges faced on campus by these set of individuals."

Mr Ayanwole Joshua appreciated the unflinching support of the Students' Union President, Mr Adewole Adeyinka PKA Mascot; and President of The Literary and Debating Society, Williams Neyen; among others in making his request a successful one.
