By: Idris Busari

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan held its prestigious Famous Five Awards and 34th Induction Ceremony at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan on the 1st of April 2023. The event had in attendance dignitaries from all walks of life. Notable figures present at the event include Mr Olaoye, investigative journalist; Mrs Seyi Awojulugbe; Mr Fisayo Soyombo; representative of the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Students, Dr Babatunde Ojebuyi; representative of the University Registrar, Mr Olawoyin; representative of UCJ UI’s grand patron, Mr Mojeed Alabi; and owner of CJID (Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development), Mr Dapo Olorunyomi; among others.

Dr Babatunde Ojebuyi while speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students commended UCJ for their support given to the University of Ibadan at large. "The Vice-Chancellor and the Dean thanked and applaud UCJ for supporting and reporting worthy news every time as he cannot see all but the press has been constructive and report events that are not controversial". As an alumnus of UCJ, he thanked the UCJ and commended them for their work.

While speaking on behalf of the registrar, Dr Olubunmi Faluyi, Mr Olawoyin expressed his disappointment in the low turnout of people during the occasion. "All the executives in the faculty, department and halls of residence are supposed to be here to know what we do here". He charged the inductees to be hardworking.

There was a panel section moderated by Mr John Okafar with Dr Babatunde Odebuyi R., the Students' Union President, Mr Adewole Adeyinka PKA Mascot and Mrs Seyi Awojulugbe on student leadership and discipline. They explained in great detail the functions of the press as the fourth estate and a watchdog in bringing to the notice of Uites happenings in the school and knowing their rights as students on campus. According to Dr Babatunde, it is only when students know their rights that they will know they are entitled to certain privileges on campus. "As long as lecturers can report students to the Students Disciplinary Committee (SDC), students can report them too if only they know their rights."

While talking about accountability in the office, Mascot charged UCJ to find out the amount remitted into the Students' Union's account from the Bursar and conduct an investigation on how the money was spent with the number of students we have on campus and check how the money was spent. "I'm asking UCJ to do their investigation on how much is in our purse and our expensive. If we have 20,000 students on campus and they pay #200 each, that is #4,000,000 and the Students' Union has been paying for electricity bills yearly and not a session. This is my second year in just an administration and we've paid twice."

Awards were given to some important personalities. The award was based on different categories. The academic personality of the year was given to the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ibadan, Professor Stella Ojebode. The journalism personality of the year was given to Mr Oluwamayowa Tijani represented by Mrs Seyi Awojulugbe. Mr Nurudeen Bakare won the Entrepreneurship of the year while famous Nollywood actor, Mr Kunle Remi who won the entertainment category was represented by Miss Victoria Aanu.
