NASESITES AND THE PLAGUE OF APATHY
By Aishat Bello
Last session, I was privileged to be part of a committee in the department alongside a few other Nasesites. On one occasion, we had a planning meeting and during that meeting, a committee member lamented aloud saying "The main problem is that Nasesites will not turn up". This person may have said it out loud but we were all thinking it, true to our fears, Nasesites did not turn up.
It has become quite a sad trend for members of this prestigious department to exclude themselves from activities in the department, those that are totally apathetic far outnumber the few willing to work for the progress of the department. It is even more disheartening to note that some prefer to criticize the effort of others rather than joining hands together and making things better. Perhaps such individuals have forgotten that being under the umbrella of NASES UI, we all share the same image and what affects one of us will most likely affect us all.
It is now a new session, another chance for us to break the cycle of being the "boring" or "overlooked" department. There are several societies within NASES such as the press, the Literary and Debating team, the Electoral committee, the DCC, the social committee and so on that Nasesites could join and make an impact, showing up at social events or departmental seminars, elections and debate competitions to cheer on our members is also another great way to be supportive of the department. Let us, fresh and returning students both seize this opportunity to get rid of the plague and be the wheel that drives our department to be the best. Let us support one another and work for the good of the association and let us, one individual at a time, get rid of the apathy that has plagued us for far too long.
