Gone are the days where virginity is a thing of pride, trust, dignity and honour to the bride and the brides’ family. The way you dress is the way people approach you. You cannot dress indecently and not be approached by an insane being.

Indecent dressing has become a thing of joy and fashion widely encouraged by the old and young. It is surprising when a young lady or young man in his/her teenage stage goes out from a house with a ripped cloth and the parents, well and alive cannot caution them on the type of clothes they put on or when a mother sews cloths exposing her daughter’s body. When corrected by decent parents, they will put up a fight with them.

Indecent dressing by the ladies has led to several negative incidents in the society. The most popular among them is harassment and rape. Harassment according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary is defined as “to make repeated attacks against (an enemy) while rape is defined as “unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent because of mental illness, mental deficiency, intoxication, unconsciousness, or deception”.

Indecent dressing among boys is mostly sagging (putting of the trousers below their waist). The negative impact on boys is minimal unlike girls. Indecent dressing among boys can attract bad influence on the lives of them. Thugs, kidnappers and rapists can influence them into doing bad work for them in the society as they have been judged at first with their dressing.

According to a news published by Sahara Reporter on 6th of October 2022 while referring to Section 26 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015 which prohibits indecent exposure ‘with intent to cause distress’, MURIC (Muslim Rights Concern) charges the Nigerian lawmakers to take a second look at that aspect of the law with a view to strengthening it and effectively criminalizing indecent dressing in the country.

Also, while speaking during the Special Education department freshers’ welcome on 10th of November 2022, the Head of Department Dr. Ayo Osisanya advised the students to always dress well as indecent dressing is not allowed in the department and the faculty at large. “The faculty of Education have a policy on indecent dressing. You should be molding models in the society”.

In the olden days, children learn by imitating their parents and friends in the society. They are taught the basic aspect of life during infant stage which includes dressing appropriately, greeting and respecting of elders, helping those in need and obeying the rules and regulation of the community. If a girl child should dress indecently, she is being corrected by the people in the environment unlike now that it is only one’s parent that is responsible for it.

Peer group, bad parenting, lack of strict enforcement on indecent dressing in the country, wrong use of social media and foreign influence are factors that influence indecent dressing.

Strict enforcement of dress codes, parents serving as good role models, domesticating Nigerian films, right usage of media, religious institution preaching against indecent dressing and the negative impacts in life and choosing the right choice of friends that are well trained from home are solutions to indecent dressings.
