The Department of Special Education holds a welcome back program for persons with disabilities on 10th September, 2025, at Room 33 in the Faculty of Education, New Building.
Key attendees included the host of the program, Mr. Adeyinka Adewole (SUG 2021/2022 President), the former NASES President, and the executives of the department.
The event commenced at exactly 11:30 AM with Miss Olaleye Suliyat, the department's Academic Director, giving the opening remarks, while Miss Oguh Precious took over as the M.C of the program. Miss Precious welcomed all students present, both from the department and other departments. She also introduced the esteemed guests: the former SUG President, the former NASES President (2023/2024), and the host, Mr. Adeboye Temidayo. The event proceeded with the recitation of the national anthem.
There was a random selection of persons with disabilities to share their experiences. Olaleye Feranmi, from the Department of Special Education, 100 Level, shared his story on how he has been able to cope, giving kudos to his friends and all Zikites who have been supportive. He highlighted the challenges individuals face during examinations, such as not being given extra time, and noted the Vice Chancellor’s response that he was not aware of the existence of students with special needs in the school.
The first speaker, Mr. Adeyinka Adewole, delivered a wonderful session on “Inclusivity, its importance, and the need for it, making the session interactive. He expressed his disappointment about people not being supportive of individuals with special needs, citing the case of Emmanuel, who once contested for the post of SUG President but couldn’t get votes from other faculties. He stressed the importance of diligence, describing it as “the mother of all creatures.” He emphasized that society holds opportunities that every student in the department can explore, highlighting the many specialties in Special Education. He encouraged students to be diligent in whichever unit they find themselves, with a mentor among their lecturers to guide them. He further advised students to focus on their studies, and for those pursuing entrepreneurship, to take it seriously. He added: “Collaboration is for those who want to move in life. Stand up for yourself, stand up for what you have. Collaboration is better than competition or better still, compete with yourself.”
The department's president, Miss Oyekola Christiana, also addressed all the students present and handled the giveaway session, whereby the first twenty people to follow on Instagram and TikTok were rewarded. She outlined the department's motto as “Management and Advancement of Ability.”
The second speaker, Mr. Adeniran Abdul Mujeeb, also spoke on “Inclusivity.” He requested a one-minute silence for one of the former NASES Presidents who had just passed, Osungbade Tolulope Ayomide. (May her soul continue to rest in peace.) He went on to explain the forms of disability in simple terms, outlining the assistive devices that are useful for them: for learners with hearing impairment; sign language, finger spelling, and speech reading; for those with physical disabilities; mobility canes, etc. He advised students to embrace individuals with special needs, not to mock them, or make them feel depressed about their conditions, while also highlighting the physical, psychological, and environmental challenges they face. He defined disability as a condition that makes it difficult for individuals to perform at the normal range as their peers.
To illustrate his point, he recommended the Indian movie “Like Stars on Earth.” He linked the movie to the program’s theme: “Diligence in Diversity,” encouraging students without disabilities to support and advocate for those with disabilities. He cited examples of former and present students who had excelled in academics and other fields, and he ended by appreciating the host, Mr. Adeboye, and all other attendees.
The event concluded with game activities and package sharing, after which the president gave the vote of thanks. The game activities were handled by the host of the program and featured voice recognition, mind games, and the use of the sense of touch.
