HEALTH BENEFITS OF DARK CHOCOLATE

By: Bello Aishat

This is for all chocolate lovers who have at one time or the other been shamed for loving the heavenly taste of chocolate in whatever form you enjoy it best. Dark chocolate isn't just amazing because of its ability to make you smile with a bite but also has some health benefits too. For a better context, dark chocolate contains more cocoa solid as compared to milk chocolate.

3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD EAT DARK CHOCOLATE (and stop being a chocolate hater)

 1.      1. DARK CHOCOLATE IS HIGHLY NUTRITIOUS

Very few enjoyable things are actually nutritious and luckily, chocolate is one of them. Quality dark chocolate contains potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium. It also contains healthy fats such as oleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid.

 2.      IT MAY LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE AND INCREASE BLOOD FLOW

Dark chocolate contains flavonoids which stimulate the lining of the arteries in order to produce nitric oxide, this nitric oxide helps the arteries to relax therefore lowering resistance to blood flow and reducing blood pressure. Another win for chocolate lovers.

 3.      DARK CHOCOLATE COULD IMPROVE BRAIN FUNCTION

Studies have shown that high flavanol cocoa (which of course is present in chocolates) can improve blood flow to the brain in young adults which improves attention, verbal learning and memory. I guess it makes sense why the boy in the Milo advert becomes sharper after a drink of rich chocolate. It may also maintain cognitive function in adults and reduce the risk of dementia.

NOTE: While chocolate is one of the proofs of God's love for us, it is also important to remember that it contains calories and sugar and should therefore be consumed in moderation.
