ONLY ONE EARTH: PLASTICS AND OUR SAFETY

By: Adejokun Elizabeth

It is no longer news that the plastic bottle that harbours your chilled carbonated drink is capable of robbing the environment of its beauty, sanctity and safety.

Plastic is said to be a polymeric material– a material that possesses very large molecules, chain-like molecules. Due to the fact that plastics are less-expensive, durable, flexible and lightweight, it is a widely used product. However, the love for plastics in our society and the world at large is taking a great toll on the environment–plants, wildlife and man.

Plastic pollution results from the wrong disposal of plastics. These plastics which are non-biodegradable materials (materials with less tendencies of decomposing) have over the years been found on land and in water bodies. The presence of microplastics (tiny plastic particles) in the ocean culminates into the rapid reduction and elimination of marine mammals and other aquatic species.

However, in a bid to limiting the endemic results of plastic pollution, various methods have been introduced. Some of these methods include strategies to reduce littering, the act of recycling and reusing plastic materials.

The effects of plastic pollution on the environment include, but is not limited to flooding, as most drainage systems are lost in the horrifying embrace of plastics.

Although, the use of plastics cannot be completely eradicated, it can however be mitigated.
