INDEPENDENCE BUT STILL DEPENDENT

By Timileyin David, MAKINDE

“Autonomous yet intertwined,
The toil of our forebears’ past
Is squandered by our own kin,
How can I unveil my homeland’s glory
Without resorting to harsh words
Against the cunning capitalist predators?

My fatherland, draped in green and white,
Blessed with nature’s wealth untold,
Now reduced to a mockery in the market square,
The sacred stones lie scattered in the streets.

Our once radiant gems have lost their luster,
And the leaders of our pack
Have turned into voracious consumers,
The clan once remarkable,
Now rendered wonderfool.

Do not consume me once more,
Deceived by honeyed tongues,
Do not display to me
The concealed struggles never seen.
Do not beckon me
To discussions of your vague battles.

We yearn for a brighter morrow,
When shall it dawn?
At sixty-three, we still cling to hope
Of true independence from foreign dominion,
When will our turn come?

Dear remarkable clans,
Let us treasure our essence,
Embrace our identity,
Do not succumb
To the culture of foreign dominion,
They are ferocious heads
Lurking to devour the prey.
Clan, appreciate and pray,
Do not become the prey.”
