MENTOR OF THE WEEK: OLADELE RASHIDAT OPEYEMI

Kindly introduce yourself

My name is Oladele Rashidat Opeyemi, a final year student of the department of Special Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan. My teaching course is Geography. I'm a Christian. I hailed from Osun state.

Can you tell us why you chose Special Education as your choice of Study or you only met yourself there?

Well, I would say I didn't chose the department, I met myself there. Education has been my dream course right from time. My initial course of study was Mathematics Education, something happened along the line that change the whole plan but I can say that by divine orchestration I met myself in Special Education and Geography.

How are you coping in the department of Special Education as it wasn't your initial course of study?

No struggles, I fell in love with the course on my first visit to Federal College of Education special Oyo. I gladly embraced Special Education upon getting to that institution. I have never come across people living with disabilities in that number before. So, to satisfy my curiosity, I was eager to be in the world of these individuals. I'm glad I did. No regrets so far.

Do you have any business aside schooling?

I don't have a business yet, but I render services such Volunteering and also work with children with disabilities on demand.

How do you cope with volunteering and schooling at the same time?

It has not been easy though, let me simply put that. It's a capacity I built over time. I have mastered the act of multitasking right from childhood. I have also learnt how to be disciplined with my time. I know what works best for me. I know the time to read, work, attend functions and fellowship and the time to play.

How do you separate studying from other activities?

I do that through planning. When I'm ready to study, I don't permit anything to disrupt me. I have my reading time that work best for me and I have been intentional about carrying out my study activities during this period. I do other activities at my convenient time.

What words of advice can you give Nasesites on how they can come out in flying colours?

First, I would say discovering yourself is paramount in the journey of success. How well do you know yourself? Giving a truthful answer to this question will enable you to know your strengths, weaknesses, hobbies, interest, personality, purpose, dreams and aspirations, expectations from family, friends and the society at large. Haven discovered yourself, then you should plan your life, your time and every other important things in your life that need to be put in place as you journey in life. Furthermore, be disciplined in your time, avoid unnecessary frivolities of life that sap precious time away. Be diligent in everything. Embrace excellence in all that you do. This is not common though, everybody is just doing life the way it comes. This is wrong. Let excellence be your watchword, it brings you to where you don't expect. Don't copy anyone, because your friend is going for night class you also want to go, please if it is not your strength don't go. Imitate good vibes from people. Ask questions. Strive to be the best. Take responsibilities according to your capabilities. Be intentional about success. Don't give even at the face of failure. You can still be at the top.  Do your assignment and project well. Assist others when they are struggling with their school work if you have the capacity. In summary, Read like your life depended on it alone and pray like you don't know how to read. God will strengthen us all.

Thank you so much for your time ma.
