EDUCATIONAL REVOLUTION IN NIGERIA

EDUCATIONAL REVOLUTION IN NIGERIA
I was galvanised into writing this article
consequently upon my observation of the state of education in so called The
Giant of Africa (Nigeria).
Obama's victory in the historic election has proved to
the world that youths are capable and have the power to change the world.
According to Dele Giwa, "If good men shy away
from politics, they will suffer from the rule of bad men". If we; youths
stay away from publicly expressing our opinions, we will be ruled by
unfettered, dubious and corrupt leaders.
A nation that deprive its citizens’ freedom of
expression and right to education will always lag behind other countries.
Education sector has been politicised. Those that are
driving education in Nigeria did not know what it entails to be on the seat.
A country built on unmitigated labour of slave can be
revolutionised by the youths. Our general has been critiqued and vilified for
its apathy over the year. We can overcome this using collective efforts and power
of new media technology.
Gone are the days when students were united to fight
against governments and school authorities for failing to fulfil their rights
but today, it has changed.
Students are rather politician thugs, campaign
coordinators rather than opposing the government for depriving them their
rights like poor funding to Nigeria tertiary institutions, poor payment of lecturers, politicising educational
sector across the states. Education system has been bastardised to the root
level.
Where is the outrage in our campuses? Why are we not
mobilising against the egregious corrupt practices in the country?
If we are concern about unemployment, we must stand
against a system that keeps us unemployed. If we are concerned about poor
development of the nation, we must stand up against those that prevent us
(youth) from developing and contributing our quota to the development of the
nation.
