MENTOR OF THE WEEK: OBIANUKA LINDA CHIDINMA

By: Idris Busari

Kindly introduce yourself ma

I am Obianuka Linda Chidinma, a 400l level student of the department of special education, visual impairment Unit. I minored in the department of communication and language arts.

Why did you choose Special Education as your course of study?

Actually I never chose special education, my dad did. It was for me to be able to change after my first year but the story changed. I got to love the course and it really exposed me to lot of things happening around the world and I'm so proud to tell people that I am a student of special education.

How are you coping in the department of Special Education as it isn't your initial choice of study?

First, my mentors made me cope in the department. When I cried to them to know what special education is. They assured me and encouraged me that sooner or later I would love the course. Later on, the stories, the adventures, the field trips and the exposure made me cope. You know that part of watching a movie that pertains to your course? Oh God! I loved it.

Do you have a business you run?

Yes. I run Nma's peppered ponmo.

How do you cope with schooling and business at the same time?

I started this business to be able to feed and fend a little for myself. I made sure that it is a business that won't deviate me from my studies and that is why I use my timetable and make my free days the delivery period.

How do you separate studying from other activities?

Oh, it is actually not easy. Time management matters in this situation. For one to be effective, I believe one has to engage in other activities not only studying. To tell you the truth, I did not do any activities in school apart from my studies and it didn't really help me. Like it made me too dull. I started engaging myself in different activities as at 200l second semester and I can say it has made me improve. Like I said it is not easy at all but my primary reason for being here is to study.  So what I do is if any important activity is clashing with my study time, then I would have to adjust my study time to a more suitable time and be fully committed to it. Note I said important! Yes, there are some less important activities that I should not engage with when I want to study. I just excuses for those ones.

What words of advice can you give Nasesites on how they can come out in flying colours?

Hey dear Nasesites, I know it is not easy being in the department not to talk of the university of Ibadan as whole.  Like our late Dr. Moji will say "Nobody is an island" meaning you are not meant to do things alone. Mingle with other students and gets things done and right. It helps. Tutorials, past questions, and effective studying helps. Finally, do not forget to take everything to God, He listens.

Thank you for your time ma

Thank you for having me.
