MENTOR OF THE WEEK: ADEBIYI OYINLOLA

By: Idris Busari

Kindly introduce yourself ma

Hello, my name is Oyinlola Adebiyi and I am currently in my fourth year. I am an avid reader and I enjoy watching enlightening YouTube videos and listening to music in my downtime.

Why did you choose Special Education as your course of study?

Just like a few others would resonate with me, Special Education was not my first choice. I wanted a different course but I met myself in Special Education. I have come to realize that sometimes the best things in life are the ones we least expect. It is funny how the things we think we want may not always bring us the most happiness but the unexpected surprises can end up being the most meaningful. Being a student in this department has broadened my horizons, introducing me to perspectives that I had not previously encountered.

How are you coping in the department of Special Education as it was not your initial choice of study?

Overall, I am doing pretty well in school but lately, I have been feeling a bit overwhelmed with school and in particular, my project. I am trying to take things one day at a time and focus on the things that matter most. I have been staying proactive and asking for help when I need it which has been really helpful.

Judging with your last session's CGPA, how were you able to get there?

In essence, I jot down notes during lectures. I then return whenever I get the chance to make my own notes. To prevent the notes from piling up, it is ideal to do this after each lesson. I do not skip any tests or assignments because they are crucial to my final scores. The final piece of advice is to review with friends to assist you realize what you could have missed or forgotten while studying.

Do you have a business you run?

Yes, I am a makeup artist.

How do you cope with schooling and business at the same time?

This is simple. When something is your passion, doing it becomes simple. I can confirm that. When I have any makeup work, I often finish my coursework. To save up time for my business, I complete all of my tasks and other projects in advance. The point is, I set my priories straight and I manage my time effectively.

How do you separate studying from other school activities?

The first thing is that I do my best to avoid putting things off. I usually start with that because I am fully aware of why I am in school. I am careful to prioritize my academics. Thus, academics come first and other things follow.

What words of advice can you give Nasesites on how they can come out in flying colours?

Stay focused, set goals and track your progress. Celebrate your achievements and use any setbacks as learning opportunities. Ask for help when needed and yes, it is okay to take breaks, to avoid burnouts. I cannot overemphasize this but make memories and be sure to document them. Our time in the university and with the same set of people is limited. You want to have memories to look back to and possibly even share with others in the future.

Thank you for your time ma

You are welcome and thank you for having me.
