By Charity Olufokunbi
Can we meet you?
My name is Nwosu David Jay Daberechukwu popularly known everywhere as Jay or ypu could say Jay-Jay and I'm a 200 Level of the department of Special Education.
What kind of sport activity do you partake in?
I partake in Football which is one of the most popular and most watched sports.
How did you get into Football?
I got into football at quite a young age as a goal keeper. As a goalkeeper, I had gone for several trials and travelled to various states. It was until my secondary school final year that I made a shift and decided to be a striker. Having tried various positions, I became confident as a striker and then I was admitted into UI with the hopes of carrying my career into the University and winning medals for the University.
Since you started playing Football in the University of Ibadan, what are the benefits you've noticed?
For benefits, Football in general helps promote good health for the getiing fit and staying fit but I will highlight some of the benefits noticed in two folds,
Firstly On a lighter note, it gave me popularity and quite a number of good friends who motivates and drives me. So I would say one benefit is that it gives you good friends and make you grow in your talent and skill
Secondly the university recognises athletes representing her and goes as far as giving of stipends to motivate and encourage the student for their excellence in sports. Although I haven't started enjoying this particular benefit, it's one I'm looking forward to it not because of the stipends but because of the passion I have for football and because it'll be a privilege to represent the university.
Thankfully I'm now a center back and not a striker and I thank the UI coach fir recognising my potential and making it possible to play this position.
Would you encourage other people to partake in sports? Please state reasons for your answer
Yes, I would.
Not only does sport keeps you fit, it helps in thinking, and your general health. My reasons for encouraging everyone to participate in sports are; better Sleep. Researchs suggests that exercise and sport triggers chemicals in the brain that can make you feel happier and relaxed. A strong heart, new connections, improved lung function, increased confidence, reduces stress, improve mental health, keeping fit, sport builds leaders.
Amongst all these, another thing to look forward to is the opportunity to represent your department, your faculty and the school in general in various competitions both within and outside the campus.
I would also like to add that sports increase cardiovascular fitness, healthy growth of bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, improved coordination and balance, a greater ability to physically relax and, therefore, avoid the complications of chronic muscular tension (such as headache or back ache).
That'll be all. Thank you for your time.
