Striking the Balance; Your Primary and Secondary Assignment

By Aishat Bello
"Your primary assignment is your academics" there's no telling the number of times students have heard this, and it is true of course. However, academics being your primary assignment suggests that there's a "secondary assignment".
Many students especially in their first year are encouraged to pour all their energy into their studies and that is exactly what they do, forgetting that life in the university is so much more than academics.
You do not want to look up from your books one day and wonder where all the time went and wishing you had spent a little more time away from the library.
It is important to always remember that education is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about developing skills, critical thinking, adaptability, proper human relations and networking, qualities which may not appear on your degree but are fundamental to a well-rounded adult in the modern world.
In conclusion, it is not always easy to strike a balance between your academics and other aspects of your life but it is very much necessary. A blend of all these aspects will definitely contribute to academic excellence, personal growth and overall fulfilling life. Study hard, make friends, learn new things, join a club and most importantly; have fun doing them all.
