The Importance of Building a Supportive School Environment
By Aishat Bello
No matter how dull you think your life is, the university is still a fast-paced environment. It doesn't matter if you're a party goer, a devout library user, an athlete or just a plain typical student involved in zero extra curricular activities, it is very likely that at a point, you'd find yourself overwhelmed with school work.
One minute your early morning classes are being cancelled and you're enjoying your free time then the next you have two tests coming up, an assignment due the next day and a group presentation with members who are not willing to contribute at all.
It's in moment like this you'll hear countless "God abeg", lots of "omoo" and a few "I wish we can just strike for like a week" here and there
It can be hard to keep up with all your school work while at the same time make sure that other aspects of your lives don't get adversely affected, this is why it is important to have a safe and supportive school environment.
If you've ever been rescued by a course mate either reminding you that an assignment is due the next day or that your lecturer is going to hold a test at the end of the one lecture you decide to skip then you'd understand that you can't always do it alone. It is important to remember that you're part of a larger community that thrives through mutual support, doing something as little as sharing your notes or listening to a friend rant about how school is driving them crazy are all steps towards achieving a warmer environment for everyone.
While we may joke about who has covered the most course materials and who has not started reading at all, it is disheartening to note that some students do indeed hoard knowledge and often avoid teaching their struggling classmates. You may be aiming to be the best graduating student in your faculty but you should also know that helping a fellow student is not going to kill that dream, it may infact help you realise it.
In conclusion, being your brother/sister's keeper in school can be done in numerous ways. It should be a principle that guides our relationships with one another as students. All students should not only gain knowledge and pass examinations but also develop compassion and empathy for one another. Having a mentality like this will not only create an academically supportive environment but also emotionally and mentally nurturing.
