THE HIDDEN SLIPPERY SLOPE OF SECOND SEMESTER ACTIVITIES
By Aishat Bello
A popular opinion in the University of Ibadan is that the second semester is for flex, after all there are fewer courses and a ton of social activities. This isn't entirely wrong, the vibe of second semester is more relaxed than first semester where the sheer number and volume of courses alone won't let you 'breet'.
These social activities are very much needed, to create a balance between the strenuous academic activities and the need to unwind. The keyword here however is balance. Once a student descends down the path of social activities at the expense of his/her studies, regaining focus is not an easy feat especially since the minimal courses in the semester deceive you into thinking you will cover (academic comeback in the mud).
Dedicating yourself to your academics goes beyond attending classes to mark attendance, it involves immersing yourself in the learning process, doing your assignment and actually learning from it (not just giving it a run through AI). Basically, you have to enjoy the school part as or at least half as much as you enjoy the partying part.
Time is another factor in the dance of second semester activities, you think you have time but there's simply not enough. Distributing the time you have over everything you want/have to do is one of the skills you need to acquire this second semester which brings us to prioritization and of course; balance.
While these social activities definitely enrich our lives in a way that a 2 hours class cannot, it still remains secondary to our main purpose of being in school. Therefore you need to find what works for you, plan your time well, boycott some of these social activities if you have to. Remember, your CGPA would not raise itself but you can have the best of the two worlds; a sound academic record and a fun time mixing with other students and possibly forging connections that will last a lifetime.
